A Christmassy Day

Koen, Liam and I have had a really bad cold for the last few weeks.  Koen's turned into to tonsillitis, mine turned into a sinus infection, and Liam started to cut 2 teeth on top of the cold.

No one was sleeping.

Everyone was miserable.

After fevers and lots of kleenexes, we headed to the doctor and now are on a cocktail of antibiotics.  Today is the first day I've felt like having any energy, and since it's so close to Christmas it was time we did a Christmas activity rather than watch Christmas movies!

Here's how we started out breakfast.....

Then it was time to build a gingerbread house!  I have never (repeat: never) built a gingerbread house so I was excited.

Until....we got started.

I opened up the package, got all the candies in their dishes, mixed the icing.....

Then once we got the sides together the instructions read to wait for an hour.  An hour!!  I just set out bowls of candy in front of my kid and now I need to wait an hour?  There will be no candies left!  So I had to take the candies away.....that was fun.

Then you can put the top on.
And wait 3 more hours.......

Finally it was time to decorate!!  The excitement had kind of worn off from earlier in the day, but Koen quickly got excited again once I pulled out the candies.

The decorating/candy scenario went something like this:  one for the house, 7 for Koen's mouth, one for the house.....

For a very amateur decorator like myself (I have never decorated a cake before either) I made a HUGE mess.  icing came out of the bottom of the plastic thingy that I was decorating with.  It flaked everywhere.....and our house didn't quite turn out like it said to do in the instructions....

So I took those instructions and threw them in the garbage!

Koen had alot of fun, and did a great job too I might add.  It may not be anything like the "Cake Boss", but for our first time it's not too shabby!

we did the house last year and i was really frustrated with all of the waiting and more waiting so this year we got a gingerbread train and it comes with a stand you build it in and you can do it in under an hours which is great for kids our age!

It turned out really awesome though!!

We bought our kit at Costco this year. Soooo much better!!! The icing comes ready made and there is a plastic stand to set the house in so you don't have to wait all day for it to dry :)

At school, we build "gingerbread" houses with graham wafers & icing - soooo much easier to do!

I learnt after the first year, buy the pre-assembled houses!

Graham wafers and icing sound much more appealing!!
